Nokia 5800 Firmware v31.0.008 Just Out

Nokia 5800 just got a new firmware update in the form of version 31.0.008/ 31.2.008. The update brings some performance improvements and better maps for your Nokia 5800. But unfortunately, there is still no sign of the much expected kinetic scrolling or a new home screen.

The firmare update comes with a new version of Ovi Maps 3.0 which offers improved maps and enhanced pedestrian and drive navigation. Some general device improvements are also noticed. The update is not available for all product codes yet but may soon be available for all in next few hours/ days. Lets see the changelog this firmare offers.

The firmware v31 was first rumored in dailymobile forums 2 days ago when it got available for one member but was not available for anyone else. How to Update:

The firmware update should be available for you by one of the following methods-

1) Via Over the Air (FOTA): Just enter *#0000# on your dial screen of your phone, then go to options- check for updates.

2) Via Nokia Software Updater (NSU) Utility: Connect your device to your PC/ Laptop, start NSU and check for update.

Atomic Dreams- Read Comics for Nokia 5800

While we grew up on a staple diet of comics from the benches of Marvel and manga from the Land of rising sun,Atomic dreams is the latest entry to our comics menu. Now that we can carry it around in our 5800s, we know exactly what to do the next time we or on the tram or bus. Will the latest app keep you occupied during the next tram/bus ride? Hit the jump button to find out. The first thing that catches your attention is the stunning artwork of the comics.

Not only is it eye-catching, it looks like it was made specially to match the resolution of our 5800s. The comic is devoid of any buttons so that none of the screen real estate is wasted to accommodate a few buttons that are seldom used. Now one may ask how to navigate within the app, in absence of any visible buttons. The answer is simple and intuitive, just flip the pages as in a paper-book to navigate to different screens within the comics. Ain’t that simple and yet cool?

What we like?

3. 100% of screen real estate used for the comics

What we hate?

1. Font size in conversation bubble may be too small for convenience for a small set of users
2. The present version is too small to keep us engrossed for a decent duration of time

Verdict

With the first chapter of Atomic Dreams- The Lost Journal of J. Oppenheimer, Nokia and Carnival Comics have demonstrated how comics paper based comic can be ported to a touch screen phone. After playing around with the comics, we must confess that this is one of the best things to happen to 5800s. We hope more comic companies will realise the potential of our 5800s and release their comics on this promising platform.

Midomi : Search and Tag Music (for Nokia 5800)

Managing Music on your 5800 can be a big headache especially if you don’t have a tagged music collection to start with. Add to that the album art incompatibility and absence of the option of tagging the files directly from our 5800s, there is a dire need for an app that can help us organise and manage our music collection on our Xpressmusic 5800s.

While Shazam, is an excellent application to tag music, its feature set is largely limited to just tagging and linking to the tracks in Nokia’s Music store. Midomi is another competing service, which offers value added features like: sharing a song on Twitter or Facebook, links to lyrics, videos, and artist info for free. Nokia Braille Reader Comes to 5800 XM

Nokia Braille Reader gives SMS for the blind and visually impaired. It captures received SMS messages and brings them to the foreground for reading using Braille and tactile feedback.

The application has been developed in a joint project between Nokia, Tampere University and the Finnish Federation of the Visually Impaired.

Compatibility and system requirements.

Nokia devices based on S60 5th Edition, including Nokia N97, 5800 XpressMusic and the newly released N97 mini, 5530, 5230 and X6.

The program is designed to automatically query the state of accounts (balance) at the mobile operator (OPSOSa) using the USSD-query and output this sum on a desktop mobile.

A calendar widget for Nokia N97 that behaves like the “today view” from MS Outlook to provide a quick overview of the next upcoming events. On N97 homescreen it shows 4 lines and if there are more events then it will be scrolling.

Web Gate Easy Reject For s60v3, s60v5 (v1.07.175)

Easy Reject blocks incoming calls with a busy tone. Short messages are filtered with no sound or light indication and can be viewed in a separate message log in the ER interface.

To block certain contacts, you just need to import them in the application and if you wish to stop rejecting their calls / messages, simply delete them from the application menu. You can import contacts from phonebook, from phone log and manually. Hidden callers can also be blocked.

Easy Reject keeps a log of all rejected calls and messages. Details of each rejected event can be viewed in a separate screen, blocked messages can be read and restored.

Easy Reject will be always on unless you “Exit” it from “Options” -> “Exit”.
